  1. A carob is a small Mediterranean tree 
  2. (Ceratonia siliqua), of the legume family 
  3. Leguminosae. It has pods 20cm (8 inches 
  4. long), which are used as animal fodder; they 
  5. are also the source of a chocolate 
  6. substitute. It can be known as the locust 
  7. tree and the pods as St John's bread.
