A carob is a small Mediterranean tree
(Ceratonia siliqua), of the legume family
Leguminosae. It has pods 20cm (8 inches
long), which are used as animal fodder; they
are also the source of a chocolate
substitute. It can be known as the locust
tree and the pods as St John's bread.
